Maybe you already know what we’re talking about. On social networks or in the corridors of middle or high school (sometimes college), insults are hurled, some are humiliated, belittled, rejected. And what do you do to fight against it?

The Pyramid of Hate

The pyramid of discrimination and violence (also known as the pyramid of hate) is a theory explaining that expressions of certain values and behaviours can lead to the encouragement of verbal and physical violence and even homicide.

Pyramid of Hate — understanding how discrimination works

Not just at work, schools are also the place where racism is most often found. Cases of Discrimination, Exclusion, bullying, school harassment, insults, micro-aggressions are everywhere.

To fight discrimination, we must understand it. (see Pyramid of Hate). One needs to deconstruct hatred to “fight against discrimination” and for the “promotion of diversity” in the media.

Ask yourself these questions :

How do you define racism ?

What are examples of racism ?

Is racism institutional or covert ?

Is there a différence between racism and bullying?

The jokes and the mocking , are they racist and sexist or are they unintentional?

How do you tackle discrimination ?

- Promote educational actions that enable students to engage in actions and reflection that promote understanding and tolerance throughout the year.
- Celebrate annual events such as the Day of Remembrance of Genocide and the Prevention of Crimes against Humanity, on 27 January; the Day of Remembrance of the Slave Trade, Slavery and their Abolition, on 10 May; the Week of Education against Racism and Anti-Semitism, around 21 March, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
- Awareness-raising during incidents of racism: All too often trivialized, the acts that constitute a racist mechanism are not only morally reprehensible, but also, in some cases, unconstitutional and illegal. The words of racism hurts.

The Pyramid of Hate allows us to explore our own attitudes and experiences of prejudice; to examine the roles and responsibilities of the individual with respect to ethnic, racial and religious prejudice; and to think critically about examples of prejudiced attitudes, prejudicial acts, discrimination, violence and genocide.
